Who was Dr. Tommy Henschel?
Dr. Tommy A. Henschel was highly respected and beloved in every community he served. His sermons illuminated the truth of Scripture and guided his congregations to a richer, deeper walk with Jesus Christ. With unwavering devotion, Dr. Henschel mentored and befriended countless young men and women who felt called to Christian ministry, as well as all who sought a closer relationship with Christ. He also carried a special burden for pastors facing difficult seasons in life and ministry, extending to them compassion, wise counsel, and encouragement toward renewed faithfulness in Christ.
For more than 55 years, Dr. Henschel faithfully led churches throughout Georgia, concluding his ministry with 22 impactful years at Cornerstone Baptist in Ellerslie. It was at Cornerstone that he affectionately became known as “Big T”—a nickname inspired when a young boy, Isaac Thomas, was adopted by a couple Dr. Henschel had been mentoring, and their gratitude and nickname became part of his enduring legacy.
Married to Carol Henschel for 53 years, together they raised four children and cherished seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Beyond his pastoral calling, Dr. Henschel’s deepest joy was his family—both his immediate family and the many who became extended family through his ministry and loving friendship.
This scholarship stands as a testament to Dr. Henschel’s lifelong commitment to nurturing those who earnestly embrace God’s call, and to providing the support and guidance essential for future generations of faithful ministry leaders. In honoring his legacy, special consideration will be given to supporting those in ministry who, like so many he compassionately served, may be walking through challenging seasons and in need of encouragement to continue faithfully in their calling.
